Overview

Kyoto has plenty of bike shops.

They range from mom and pop places on small neighborhood streets to fancy boutiques downtown.

There are also a few decent chain stores and used bike shops. At the latter, you can walk out with a simple but useful bike for around 10,000 yen. Cycle Eirin, which has seven shops in Kyoto, is very good. The shop closest to downtown is at the corner of Kawaramachi - Marutamachi.

Downtown

Kyoto Station Area

Iwai Cycle
On Omiya Dori south of Shichijo Dori. Tel: 075 320 3303. Open 9 am -  7 pm. Closed Mondays.

Imperial Palace Area

Takenaka
A one-man operation, Takenaka-san speaks English and is, better still, very patient. Go north on Teramachi, cross Marutamachi. At the first small street, turn right. He is on the left.

Western Kyoto

Koseki
Just before you get to the geisha area Kamishichiken, not far from Kitano Tenmangu Shrine.  075 463 3428 Closed Mondays.

Loro World Recumbent
7-9-9 Chuudoji, Kushigecho, 600- 8802. On Gojo Dori, close to Tambaguchi Station; 075 811 7162 Closed Thursdays.

Sanjo Arcade

Natural Cycle
On the south side of Sanjo Kai shopping arcade.　Tel:　075 811 7997 Closed Wednesdays.

Northern Kyoto

Vigore
From the north side of Takaragaike, ride along Takaragaike Dori heading west. On the north side.　Tel: 075 791 6158 Closed Mondays.

Matsumura Cycle
In Kitayama, almost to the Takano River, is, Matsumura Cycle. On the the south side.　Tel: 075 712 1222 Closed Thursdays.
