Overview
Here is a partial list of rental options in Kyoto, by area.
Kyoto Station Area
Rental Company: Kyoto Cycling Tour Project, Inc. (KCTP)
Go out the north central exit (towards Kyoto Tower). Turn left. Walk towards the Post Office and past Bic Camera (on your left) with the JR tracks above you and on your left. The APA Hotel is on your right. Cross the street and it is in front of you.

Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion) Area

Okazaki/Museum Area
Rental Company: Kyo no Raku Chari
On Higashi Oji street near Higashiyama subway station. The bikes are electric and easy to ride.

Fee: 2000 per day. Helmets and child seats 200 day.
North Kyoto - Takaragaike Grand Prince Hotel Area
Rental Company: Tabi Chari - pick up at the Grand Prince Hotel
Fee: 2000 yen per day for an electric bike.
Higashiyama
Rental Company: Tabi Chari - pick up at the Westin Miyako Hotel
Fee: 2000 yen per day for an electric bike.
Demachiyanagi
Rental Company: Carillon Demachiyanagi
To the left (north) of the Eizan Demachiyanagi train station.

Fee: 500 per day. Return by 7 pm, but for another 250 yen you can keep the bike until 10 the next morning.
You get what you pay for at this shop. Many of the bikes are in poor condition.
Kitaoji (near Kitaoji subway and bus station)

Fee: 500 per day. For another 250 yen you can keep the bike until 10 the next morning.
Kawabata - Sanjo Area (downtown)
On Kawabata Street just north of Sanjo Ohashi bridge. On the mountain side (not the river side) of the street is a mom and pop store with a sign out front.
Fee: 1,000 per day. Return by 6 pm.
There are two shops offering rental bikes. The one farther north - it also seems to sell fishing lures - is often empty of any human beings. Not recommended.
Shijo - Karasuma Area (downtown)
Rental Company: J-Cycle
On Higashinotoin south of Takatsuji. From Shijo - Karasuma, walk three blocks south on Karasuma. At the third corner you will see the Gojo Police Station. This is Takatsuji Dori. Go east on Takatsuji in the direction of Kawaramachi. At the first corner, Higashinotoin (Hotel Nikko Prince is on the north corner), turn south in the direction of Kyoto Station. J-Cycle is half a block down on the right side.
Fee: 800 per day for standard bike. 950 for bike with three gears. 1,500 for electric bike. 1,200 for mountain bike, 800 for a junior mountain bike. Return by 6:30 pm.
