Community Cycle
Community Cycle まちかどミナポート
Overview
With the increase in tourists, rental shops are increasing.
The latest move towards making Kyoto a bike-friendly metropolis is a public rental program known as "Community Cycle" (or, in Japanese, "Machikado Minapoto").
Like Paris's Velib cycle sharing system and Barcelona's Bicing program, Kyoto's Community Cycle makes using a rental cycle quick, easy, and cheap.
Simply put, you can rent and return bikes from one of four locations in central Kyoto (plus 21 EcoStations), pay with credit card or Pitapa IC card - and off you go.
No membership. No paperwork. No special card. That's it. You don't even have to deal with a human being.
The only restriction is that the bikes cannot be rented for more than a total of three days. Also, the Stations are open from 8 am until 10 p.m.
Payment System
200 yen for the first hour, 100 yen for each additional hour.
Rental/Return Locations (see map below)
Keihan Sanjo Station: behind the shopping mall at Sanjo - Kawabata
Kyoto Yodobashi Station: 2nd floor of the Yodobashi Camera store

Jingu Marutamachi Station: On Kawabata Dori, south of Marutamachi Station, 2nd floor

Rental System
At one of the five rental stations, find a bike you like - they are all the same - and confirm the port number. Second, go to the payment machine ("calculation post") and register at the touch pad in either English or Japanese. Third, pay with a credit card or IC card. Take receipt. Go to the port and unlock your bike with the same number on noted your receipt. Pull out the bike.
Return System
At one of the five rental stations, return the bike and put it into a port. Lock bike. Go to payment machine, and with your IC card or credit card make final payment.
