Kawai Kanjiro Memorial Museum 河井寛次郎記念館

Overview

The Kawai Kanjiro Memorial Museumis the former home and atelier of one of Japan's great potters.

The Kawai Kanjiro Memorial Hall opened in 1973. Kawai Kanjiro (1890-1966) created many of his works here. The hall has exhibits of his work and houses the collection.

Kawai was born in Shimane in 1890, and moved to Kyoto in 1914 following graduation from high school in Tokyo.

He was a major figure in the Mingei - traditional crafts - movement in Kyoto.

Kawai was known for combining Japanese and English design elements in his works. His work moreover tends towards the asymmetrical, the "imperfect."

During his lifetime, he turned down all official honours, up to and including Japan's Living National Treasure.

The house is located on a side street southeast of the corner of Gojo - Higashioji Streets.
