Overview
Kiyomizu Temple
Kiyomizu Temple ranks with the Golden Pavilion as a must see on any Kyoto itinerary.
Kiyomizudera, or "Pure Water Temple," was founded in 788 C.E. in the Higashiyama hills in eastern Kyoto. It is named for the pure waters of a falls located on the site of the temple. The Otowa Waterfall, located at the base of the temple's main hall, is a highlight for visitors as the water is said to confer a long life and success in love.
In 1994, the temple was named a UNESCO world heritage site.
Kiyomizu Temple is perhaps best known for the wooden stage that sticks out from the main hall, far above the ground below.
The approach to the temple is a long lovely slope lined with shops. Many types of goods are for sale, including local pottery.
The entire area - known as Higashiyama - is a among the most beautiful and popular areas of the city. In addition to Kiyomizu Temple, Yasaka Shrine, Kodaiji Temple, and other sites are an easy walk or ride.
For those cycling to the temple, it is advised that bicycles be parked below; then the last stretch can be walked. It is too steep and too crowded to ride up to the top.
