Overview
Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art is a splendid old pile that hosts many of the best exhibits in Kyoto.
Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art opened in 1933. It was built in commemoration of the Showa emperor's coronation, and was in the early days known as the Showa Imperial Coronation Art Museum of Kyoto.
Following World War II, the facility was briefly commandeered by the United States military.
It is directly across the street from The National Museum of Modern Art Kyoto.
Between the two and spanning Jingu Dori is a large vermillion torii gate. That gate leads the way to Heian Shrine in the distance.
Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art has put on shows in recent years by the likes of Van Gogh, Vermeer, and many many more.
The main holdings of the museum are 19th and 20th century painting - both Japanese and Western - sculpture, and handicrafts.
The galleries are old and a bit cramped, though not without their charm. For those attending a big-ticket show, you should either go very early or on a snowy Tuesday.
