Overview
Kyoto National Museum
Kyoto National Museum is a wonderful Meiji Period brick building on a bluff overlooking Shichijo Dori.
The Kyoto National Museum was founded in 1897.
It is one of the three formerly imperially-mandated art museums in Japan. The collection of the Kyoto National Museum is primarily concerned with pre-modern Japanese and Asian art.
It is across the street from Sanjusangendo Temple.
Also close are the Hyatt Hotel and Chishakuin Temple.
The museum was built to house and display art treasures owned by temples and shrines. In addition, items donated by the Imperial Household Ministry are in the Museum's collection.
The museum is divided into three areas: Fine Arts; Handicrafts; and Archaeology.
The museum is currently being renovated and will reopen in 2013.
