Nishijin Textile Center

The Nishijin Textile Center is a facility dedicated to the area in which it sits. Nishijin is the center of Kyoto's weaving industry. The seven-story building is located on Horikawa Dori, within that area in the north central part of Kyoto.

The Nishijin Textile Center puts on exhibits and demonstrations related to traditional Nishijin textile industry.

There are in addition six kimono shows a day.

Moreover, there are hand-weaving demonstrations and historical materials on display.

It is also possible to play dress up. For a fee, one can dress as a maiko or geisha in a 12-layer kimono.

Textile production in this area dates back more than 1000 years. Demand in the last one hundred years, however, has decreased as a result of the introduction of Western clothes.

The name “Nishijin” is relatively recent, though, dating only to the 15th century. It literally translates as "western camp," which it was during the calamitous Onin War. Nishijin was a rebel stronghold.
