Overview
Ryukoku Museum
Ryukoku Museum is the newest museum in Kyoto, and is the largest museum in the world devoted to buddhist art and artifacts.
The permanent collection of the Ryukoku Museum consists of cultural artifacts related to Buddhism, from its birth in India, subsequent spread throughout Asia, and finally its arrival and development in Japan.
Financed and run by Ryukoku University, Kyoto's oldest university, the museum opened in 2011.
The Museum is across the street from Nishi Honganji Temple, a UNESCO Word Heritage Site.
In addition to a basement level, there are 3 floors above ground in a spacious and handsome facility.
The basement is made up primarily of a courtyard with a Japanese maple and rock garden.
The 1st floor features a "multipurpose" room designed for lectures and planned exhibits related to the history of the region. There are also a cafe and museum shop.
The second floor is devoted to Buddhism in Asia.
The third floor focuses on Buddhism in Japan.
