Public Baths in Kyoto

Public Bath (Sento)

CycleKyoto highly recommends visiting a public bath, be it a humble neighborhood place or a high-end super sento.

In much of Japan the public bath is a dying species. All Japanese homes have indoor plumbing and private baths. However, for many the act of bathing with strangers or friends publicly is far superior to soaking alone at home. Kyoto has seen its share of sento closings, but the pubic bath culture is still very much alive in Kyoto.

As of 2010, some 170 public baths were still in business in Kyoto. The fee is 410 yen for adults at all but the super sentos.
