The Museum of Kyoto
The Museum of Kyoto 京都府京都文化博物館
Overview
The Museum of Kyoto
The Museum of Kyoto is now a must-visit museum. In the past, the museum was a fairly dull experience.
However, in the last five years or so, a series of fabulous exhibits have brought in the punters.
The building was completed in 1906 but the Kyoto National Museum was not founded until 1988.
The Permanent collection has three sections: a historical museum that exhibits history and culture; an art gallery showing works of Japanese and western painters, sculptors, and artisans associated with Kyoto; a hall for showing films associated with Kyoto.
The building was in a previous incarnation the Bank of Japan's Kyoto Branch.
It is located on Sanjo Dori, not far from Karasuma.
Adjacent to the Meiji Period brick structure is a new wing.
