Bringing a Bike on Trains 自転車を電車に運ぶ

Overview

For those planning on going to Nara, Shiga, or beyond, what is the policy of the many railways in the Kyoto area vis-à-vis bringing your bike onto a train?

Four major rail lines serve Kyoto. Moreover, there is the bullet train.

Policies for all four companies are very similar.

Bullet Train

The bike must be foldable and placed inside a bike bag. During very crowded times, you may be denied the right to board with your bike. There is no fee for the bike.

For racing bikes, however, a fee will be levied (though, to be honest, we are not sure how the person at the gate will make this determination).
